The Medina Crew

Medina • Near Jemaa el-Fna / inner souk routes

The Medina Crew lives in the ancient heart of Marrakech, where narrow alleyways wind between centuries-old riads and bustling souks. This crew of approximately 8-12 cats has adapted to life among the daily flow of merchants, artisans, and visitors who traverse these historic routes. What makes this crew special is their location near Jemaa el-Fna and the inner souk passages. They have established feeding zones at specific spots where local shopkeepers recognize them and where the morning and evening routines bring some stability to their lives. The cats in this crew face unique challenges: the intense foot traffic, the narrow streets with little shade during summer, competition with other animals for food scraps, and the constant environmental stressors of urban medina life. Yet they persist, showing remarkable resilience and adaptation. Our observation work began in early 2024 when local volunteers noticed recurring health issues among several cats in this zone. We have since established a monitoring routine, identified key individuals, and begun coordinated care with partner veterinarians. The goal for The Medina Crew is to achieve full health monitoring, complete sterilization coverage, routine feeding schedules, and emergency medical response capacity. With consistent support, this crew can serve as a demonstration model for sustainable street cat care in dense urban heritage areas.

Visitor-Friendly Crew

This crew is visible to tourists in the medina but requires respectful observation only. Do not feed random food or approach sleeping cats. Photography is fine from a distance. The best viewing times are early morning (7-9am) or evening (5-7pm) when the crew gathers at known feeding zones. Never chase or disturb resting cats. Support through donations rather than direct interaction.
